It is directed by M. M. Mukherjee. Yatin Karyekar cast as lead role, with Sadhana, Ashok Kumar, Shreeram Lagoo, Raghubir Yadav, Amrish Puri and Kader Khan in supporting roles. Manoj Kumar and Sanjay Dutt play supporting roles as well. Plot Chandni is a story of Jagdish, a detective. He is a tough guy, and capable of any means to solve his cases, even if it means to punish the criminals. After a raging case, in which a merciless killer called "the dog" is on the loose, Jagdish is discharged. Jagdish aspires a quiet life, away from the police force. But when he learns of the mysterious death of an underworld don, Suresh, he is drawn back to investigate the case. Suresh was a popular don, close to gangsters and even the police, who feared him. Chandni discovers that Suresh's wife Nisha is next in line to succeed him, after Suresh's only son has also died. Hence, Jagdish investigates Suresh's death, in order to find out how he died, and who might have killed him. Jagdish does not believe that there is any conspiracy involved, and confronts the police commissioner. This incident begins to alienate Jagdish from his co-workers. Nisha is jealous of Jagdish's closeness with Suresh. She hires a hitman to kill Jagdish, but the hitman fails, and is captured by the police. Nisha is then kidnapped by Suresh's henchman and shot dead. This ends Jagdish's investigation into the case.
